Nothing causes me anxiety quiet like the thought of losing my passport while I’m traveling. Losing anything when you’re traveling is frustrating, but your passport is really your lifeline to ensure a bit of safety, confirm your identity, and get you back home so you’re not stranded. No one wants to miss flights or shell out more money than they originally anticipated.

Make and keep copies

It’s important to make copies of the first two pages of your passport, and keep the copies with you when you’re traveling. I used to walk around with my passport everywhere I went and my husband would remind me that that wasn’t a good idea. So now I always keep a copy with me whenever I walk around.

You can also take a clear photo of your passport that you keep on your phone as a pdf file. It’s easier to do that than store it in your camera roll, where it can be harder to find.

Use this app for help

The ItsEasy app allows you to submit your 2in x 2in photo and required documents, digitally. ItsEasy will alert you to any changes or updates that are pertinent including emergency information and the process for getting a new passport.

There’s a specific feature called “Lost Passport Alert.” You would use this specific function if you suddenly lose your passport in the US or abroad. Just press this button and the app will give you all of the information on what to do next.

The app also shows you where the nearest embassy or consulate is located and is a government-registered and approved agent for faster processing options.

Department of State recommendation

The Department of State says that:

You should only report your U.S. passport lost or stolen if the original, physical version of the passport book or passport card has been lost or stolen. Once you report a U.S. passport lost or stolen, it is invalid and cannot be used for international travel.

It’s important to know that you have definitely lost your passport. If you’re sure you haven’t just misplaced it somewhere where you can find it, follow thse steps.

1. Contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate.

2. Speak to the Consular Section to report your lost passport.

If you are scheduled to leave a foreign country shortly, provide the consular staff with the details of your travel. It’s best to have your travel itinerary printed so that they can see it.

A replacement passport will cost you $110. The fee list is here. If you cannot afford to pay for the replacement, the Department of State offers two options:

  • Provide the name and contact information for someone who can assist in helping you pay and they will be contacted.
  • Request emergency financial assistance from the US Department of State.

If you receive financial assistance from the Department of State, you will automatically be given an emergency passport that is only issued for temporary purposes like continuing your trip or getting back to the US. This passport will need to be converted into a full passport for future travel and will require you to pay back the Department of State.
