Topline

The team behind Medina Spirit, the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby, stands to lose $1.86 million in prize money if the horse is disqualified from the sport’s most famous race, though anyone who won money from betting on Medina Spirit will be able to keep their winnings.

Key Facts

During a drug test conducted after Medina Spirit’s winning race, the horse was found to have double the permitted levels of an anti-inflammatory steroid called betamethasone in his system.

If Medina Spirit is disqualified, the horse’s team will be forced to surrender the more than $1.8 million in winnings, which will then be handed over to Mandaloun, the horse that came in second place in the race.

However, it’s unlikely the runner-up’s team will see any cash any time soon — Medina Spirit must have a split sample taken to confirm the result, and Baffert indicated he would appeal a disqualification, a process that could take years in court.

Luckily for racing fans who won big at the race, all bets backing Medina Spirit’s win will be honored, and bettors who wagered on Mandaloun will not be entitled to winnings even if Medina Spirit is disqualified.
