The Milwaukee Brewers came into today’s Cactus League action against the Oakland A’s undefeated. In each game, the Brew Crew scored seven runs. With Christian Yelich, Keston Hiura, Avisail Garcia, Travis Shaw, and Kolton Wong in the lineup, you would think Milwaukee would have another nice offensive day.
Alas the A’s kept the Brewers’ bats quiet in this one as Oakland won 2-1. The A’s took the lead early. They got on the board in the top of the first via a trio of unforced errors by Josh Lindblom. Tony Kemp led the game off with a single to right field, and what followed was rust, jitters, the result of being an unexpected starter, or something.
Josh Lindblom was just plain wild. He hit Ramon Laureano. He hit Mark Canha, and the bases were loaded just like that with just one out. The Brewers’ starter next bounced the ball in the dirt, and it got away from catcher, Luke Maile. The speedy Tony Kemp scored.
The Brewers were actually lucky to get out of the inning with just the one run being scored. While Lindblom was wild, he was also able to pitch out of the trouble that he created with the only exception being the run scored by Kemp.
The Brewers would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. Christian Yelich got the inning started with a double on a rope past the first base bag.
Tyrone Taylor replaced Yelich on the base paths and would come around to score. Travis Shaw drove him in with a single to right.
J.P. Feyereisen, Bobby Wahl, Phil Bickford, Ray Black, and Hoby Milner all logged an inning on the mound without giving up a run, so Brewers’ pitching was effective. After Lindblom, Milwaukee’s pitchers made only one mistake.
That mistake came in the seventh inning, and today’s game was a seven inning affair. Thomas Jankins took the hill in the seventh, and Buddy Reed took him deep. That homer proved to be the game winner as the Brewers lose for the first time this Spring.
Milwaukee is right back at it tomorrow afternoon as they take on the San Diego Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 CT. Drew Rasmussen is scheduled to start for Milwaukee. Blake Snell will take the hill for San Diego. Fox Sports San Diego will telecast the game, and you should be able to catch it on Fox Sports Wisconsin. WTMJ 620 and the Brewers Radio Network will broadcast the game on the radio.
