NORMAL (HOI) -- The Graduate Workers Union at Illinois State University announced Monday it will hold a bargaining unit meeting in the upcoming weeks, when it will discuss a strike authorization vote.
The meeting is to be held on March 26 to discuss the vote, which will take place on April 2.
"A strike authorization vote is not a vote to strike immediately, but another step in the process of strike readiness as the Graduate Workers Union fights to win a contract to confront the rampant poverty and debt of their bargaining unit," according to a press release from the union. "A strike authorization vote authorizes the bargaining team to announce an imminent strike, but another strike vote would still take place prior to a work stoppage."
Earlier this month, the union said it presented a proposal that would place ISU teaching assistants at the same salary level as unionized teacher assistants at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.
