Sears at the Colonial Park Mall in Lower Paxton Township is closing on Nov. 14.
The department store has had a steady presence at the mall since the complex opened in the 1960s.
In a statement, Transformco, which acquired Sears out of bankruptcy two years ago, said it plans to “redevelop and reinvigorate the property.” Transformco said part of its strategy is to “unlock the value of the real estate and pursue the highest and best use for the benefit of the local community.”
The company owns the property and said more details will be announced when plans are finalized. The mall is owned by Kohan Retail Investment Group.
Transformco didn’t share a timeline for the store closing.
“This location has potential for redevelopment within a variety of asset classes,” said Scott Carr, president of real estate for Transformco, in a statement. “We intend to reinvigorate and maximize the value of the real estate to meet the needs of the Harrisburg market.”
In 2019, Transformco acquired more than 420 Sears and Kmart stores from bankrupt Sears Holdings Corporation. It has slowly been closing the stores, starting with 96 locations nationwide in 2020.
Sears stores in Lancaster and York counties have closed in recent years. Earlier this year, Retail Dive said it estimated Transformco owned about 40 Kmart stores and 39 Sears full-line stores, including Puerto Rico and other territories.
The company said the Sears Appliance & Mattress at the Capital City Mall in Lower Allen Township will remain open. The store replaced a department store which closed in 2017 at the mall.
In the meantime, the Colonial Park Mall over the years has lost a number of tenants including Bon-Ton, CVS Pharmacy, Justice, Things Remembered, American Eagle Outfitters and Country Crossings.
Lower Paxton Township Board of Supervisors last year passed a zoning ordinance that could set up the groundwork for possible redevelopment at the mall. The township adopted the Towne Center zoning district to facilitate “walkable, livable, and attractive mixed-use development centers of a sustainable density to create a sense of place.”
“Keeping in mind this is putting in the framework to allow this to happen,” Lowman Henry, chair of the Lower Paxton Township board of supervisors, told PennLive in August. “It’s still private property owned by a private ownership group and any redevelopment there would be up to the private sector ultimately but what we’re doing is creating a situation where we provide options.
This story was updated to include the store’s closing date.
