The Detroit Tigers lost a lead for the second day in a row, falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Tuesday night at PNC Park.
The Pirates (50-89) entered the series on a six-game losing streak but have now won two in a row against Detroit (65-75).
Tigers’ pitchers navigated jams largely unscathed through the first five innings, but reliever Alex Lange ran into trouble in the sixth after retiring the first two batters and being on the verge of recording the team’s first 1-2-3 inning.
Instead, Yoshi Tsutsugo reached on an infield single, Bryan Reynolds doubled and Colin Moran drew a walk to load the bases. Ben Gamel followed with a two-run single to give the Bucs a 3-2 lead.
The Tigers scored two in the third inning when Willi Castro walked, Derek Hill tripled and Robbie Grossman singled Hill home.
Miguel Cabrera had three hits, including a lead-off double in the eighth inning. Pirate reliever David Bednar retired the next three batters and the Tigers failed to score.
Tigers starter Wily Peralta walked a tightrope, as he often does, allowing six hits and three walks in four innings, but giving up just one run.
The Tigers also got the lead-off man on in the ninth inning when Harold Castro slapped a single to left. But reliever Chris Stratton once again retired three in a row to close out the game.
Up next: The Tigers wrap up their three-game series in Pittsburgh on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. Tigers rookie right-hander Matt Manning (3-6, 6.29 ERA) will face Pirates righty Mitch Keller (4-10, 6.23).
