Vandals strike El Paso County courthouse, other downtown buildings - KKTV 11 News

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - Vandals targeted several downtown Springs buildings overnight, including the El Paso County courthouse.

Calls regarding shattered windows and other damage started trickling into the police department around 3 a.m. Sunday. Officers found damage on at least two businesses and the county courthouse; excluding the courthouse, the cost of the destruction to the businesses comes out to about $10,000, police told 11 News. Police have not tallied the amount of damage to the courthouse.

According to our reporter, the businesses targeted appear to be the Atomic Cowboy restaurant and McDivitt Law Firm.

“You know it’s frustrating,”David McDivitt said. “We try to be open and accessible for people and that’s why our main building is on the ground level so it’s accessible for people. It’s visible. It’s right there on a very busy street and obviously that part of downtown Colorado Springs is continuing to grow and develop in a really positive way--but with that seems to come a little extra vandalism from time to time.”

McDivitt says this is the third time in ten years this has happened there.

“It’s frustrating because it just interferes with our ability to help people and the time that you spend to repair the windows, get things get boarded up, none of that is conducive to helping our clients out and trying to make a big impact on the community.”

He says its not just his law firm that he is concerned about...its all of the ones targeted as well.

“We all just have to be better neighbors and so I just ask those people who go out and commit these acts of vandalism to just take a minute, take a breath, and think how am I helping? How am I improving the lives of somebody else by doing something so destructive?”

Currently, there is no suspect information.

The case in the early stages of investigation, and nothing further has been released at this time. We will continue to update this article as we learn new information.
