MILWAUKEE — The Celtics had their chances to win. Even late. Even after climbing all the way back from a 14-point deficit. But Al Horford’s last-second tip-in was deemed too late as the clock went off before the ball left his fingers.
The Celtics fell 103-101 to the Bucks on Saturday at Fiserv Forum. Boston now trails Milwaukee 2-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with a key Game 4 coming up at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
It was a treacherous third quarter that made life so difficult for the Celtics. They were doubled up 34-17 by the Bucks in the frame as Milwaukee stole the lead and momentum behind its home court. The Bucks finally got some offensive flow while the Celtics let their ineffective offense affect their defense.
The Celtics, to their credit, forced the Bucks to sweat in the fourth quarter. There wasn’t much quit and Jaylen Brown heated up as he put up 15 points of his 27 in the final 12 minutes. The Celtics were down by as many as 14 points and they took the lead with less than two minutes left to play. But the C’s couldn’t finish off the clutch game.
It was a physical game right from tipoff Saturday. While there were plenty of calls, both the C’s and Bucks got in their blows, and both teams will walk away with their share of bruises.
While Brown was stellar in the fourth, it was a forgettable game from Jayson Tatum, who shot 4-for-19 from the field for just 10 points. But Brown and Al Horford picked up the slack in a close fourth quarter. Horford was feeling it Saturday as he finished with 22 points and 16 rebounds for the double-double, though the late tip-in will sting.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was aggressive all game on his way to 42 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists on 16-for-30 shooting. He powered his way forward for the Bucks and looked every bit his two-time MVP self.
After Saturday’s loss, it sets the stage for a crucial Game 4. While Game 5 back in Boston is guaranteed, taking care of business on the road would be huge for the Celtics for the rest of the series.
