Rockies lose to the Giants (again), but suffer a bigger loss on the mound - 104.3 The Fan

Somehow, the Colorado Rockies were defeated by the San Francisco Giants for the 11th straight time on Monday night.

And that wasn’t even the biggest loss of the game.

Rockies starting pitcher Antonio Senzatela lasted just two innings before leaving before the third with back tightness. Senzatela tried to warm up to begin the inning, but his body just wasn’t cooperating.

Colorado eventually fell 7-6, as closer Daniel Bard took the loss for the second consecutive game. The contest was tied 6-6 going to the ninth inning before Bard gave up a solo home run to Mike Yastrzemski that proved to be the difference.

But back to Senzatela, the bigger story here. He hasn’t been great in 2022 (2-2, 4.55 ERA), but he’s been one of the Rockies most consistent starting pitchers the last few years. Manager Bud Black said after the game an IL stint is likely.

“It’s too early to tell, but more than likely he’ll be headed towards the injured list,” Black said.

The Rockies fell to 17-18 with the loss, and as I wrote on Monday, they may not get above .500 or out of the NL West basement the rest of the year. With five more games on this homestand against the Giants, who have owned them, followed by the NL East leading Mets, it’s going to be a tough hole to climb out of.

To his credit, Senzatela did speak to reporters after the game and sounded more optimistic than his manager.

“Hopefully not,” Senzatela said of possibly hitting the IL. “I got in my mind, ‘Don’t miss too much time, or don’t even miss a start.’ I told them I think I can be right for my next start.”

You have to respect the optimism, but the video above doesn’t look like a guy who will be ready to pitch in five days.

For the Rockies, things went from bad to worse on Monday night, with the possibility the season is headed off the rails after a promising 15-10 start. They’ll now likely have to scramble their starting rotation as a leaky ship takes on even more water.
