Panthers Lose Game One At Belmont 9-5 - Eastern Illinois University Athletics

CHARLESTON, Ill. - 
Eastern Illinois (30-16, 10-9 OVC) loses game one at the Belmont (32-17, 14-5 OVC) by a final score of 9-3. After a lightning delay in the second inning, the Bruins bounced back and scored four off of starting pitcher Trevor Nicholson. Nicholson went two innings in the game allowing seven runs one seven hits and three strikeouts. At the plate, Logan Eickhoff went three for five with a run scored. Nathan Aide also collected two hits including a two RBI double in the ninth inning. Jesse Wainscott threw four innings in relief while allowing only two hits, no runs, and had seven strikeouts.

EIU started the game with two straight hits from Eickhoff and Chris Worcester to put runners on the corners. Ryan Ignoffo was able to hit a SAC fly to center field to bring home Eickhoff for the game's first run.

Belmont bounced back in the bottom of the first with three runs of their own. Brodey Heaton was able to capitalize on an RBI double off of Nicholson to bring home Guy Lipscomb. Logan Jarvis then hit an two RBI single to center field to push Belmont's lead to 3-1.

After a weather delay in the bottom half of the second, the Bruins were able to score four more on Nicholson. Heaton hit a triple after two singles to score two runs. Tommy Crider then followed the triple with a two run home run to extend the Bruins lead to 7-1.

Wainscott entered the game in the third inning and posted three strikeouts through the third and fourth. Worcester was able to start EIU's offense in the fifth inning after a SAC fly to left field that scored Lucas DiLuca. Nicholas Rucker added an RBI single to end the inning after scoring Ignoffo to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Bruins came back in the seventh inning by adding two more off a SAC fly by Mason Landers and a single by Jarvis that scored Jarvis. Mac Hickman was able to get out of the inning with no more damage.

Both teams went three and out in the eighth inning. Panthers mounted a small comeback in the ninth with a double by Aide that scored two to cut the lead to 5-9, but Dominic Baratta was able to end the game with a strikeout by Rucker.

EIU scored five runs on 10 hits with no errors. Belmont scored nine runs on 11 hits with two errors. Game two will start tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
