ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Macalester College volleyball team played regionally-ranked Bethel University tough, losing the MIAC match in three close sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 Friday night in the Leonard Center. The loss drops the Scots to 14-12 on the season, including a 4-6 mark in conference play. The Royals improve to 15-9, 7-3 MIAC.

In the first set, Macalester led by as many as five points and held a 21-18 edge later in the set. After Bethel tied the score, a kill by sophomore right side Gwen Wooten (Allen, Texas/Allen) put the Scots up by one, 22-21. The Royals tallied the next three points, only to have sophomore outside hitter Adisa Preston (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) thwart set point with a kill to make the score 24-23. But a service error ended the set in Bethel's favor, 25-23. Preston and senior outside hitter Eliza King (Novato, Calif./San Marin) each had five kills as the Scots hit .361 in the set.

The Royals hit .424 with 16 kills in the second set to hold off Macalester, 25-18. In the third set, the Scots tallied the first six points and led 14-10 later in the set. Bethel scored five consecutive points to lead 15-14, eventually taking a 22-19 advantage. After the teams exchanged points, kills by Wooten and Preston brought Macalester to within one, 23-22. A kill by Emily Rossing set up match point, and a service ace gave Bethel the win, 25-22. The win clinches a spot in the MIAC Playoffs for the Royals.

Preston registered seven kills in the third set and led the Scots with 14 kills for the match. King finished with 12 kills and a team-best 11 digs, while Wooten added seven kills. First year Maya Mortenson (Minneapolis, Minn./Spring Lake Park) and sophomore Nicole Norton (Brussels, Wis./Southern Door) split the setting duties with 20 and 18 assists, respectively. Sophomore libero Torrance Williams (Houston, Texas/Yes Prep Northbrook) contributed 10 digs. Kirstin Cotter led Bethel with 15 kills.

Macalester wraps up the 2022 season on Saturday, Oct. 29 with a home MIAC match against St. Catherine. The match starts at 5:00 p.m. in the Leonard Center. The Scots will honor their seniors at the conclusion of the match.
