CHENEY, Wash. – The Texans went into Saturday's game on a record pace shooting the ball, but they couldn't find that same rhythm in Cheney, Washington, in their 65-45 loss at Eastern Washington.
The Texans (5-3, 0-0 WAC) shot just 25.5 percent from the field (13-of-51) and 17.6 percent from distance (3-of-17) at Reese Court, a far drop from their 26 made three-pointers on 45.6 percent shooting over the previous two games.
The Eagles improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 at home this season with the win.
Despite the shooting woes for Tarleton, the Texans remained competitive, with the boost coming in the third quarter. After falling behind by 18 in the frame, Tarleton went on a 13-1 run to get within six at the 3:06 mark. That was the closest they'd get, however, plagued by a seven-point fourth quarter to make the score appear more lopsided than it was.
EWU didn't shoot it much better than Tarleton, going 23-of-54 (.426) from the field and 5-of-20 (.250) from downtown, but they outrebounded the Texans 42-30 and outscored them in the paint 34-18.
Tarleton didn't have a double-digit scorer on Saturday, with two nine-point outings by Tyler Jackson and Nyajah Mitchels. Elise Turrubiates led the bench with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting and five rebounds in 19 minutes.
Eastern Washington's Jaleesa Lawrence had the game's lone double-double off the bench with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Aaliyah Alexander had a game-high 14 points, adding five rebounds and two steals, while Jamie Loera finished with 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and five steals.
Tarleton will wash this one away on Wednesday in their return to Wisdom Gym, where the Texans are 4-0 this season. They'll face Northwestern State at 6 p.m. CT. It will be a "Teddy Bear Toss" at the game, where fans are encouraged to throw a stuffed animal on the basketball court at halftime in order to win a prize, in turn creating an iconic scene of a court full of stuffed animals that will all be donated to local child advocacy centers.
