Jets right tackle Max Mitchell became a surprise starter as a rookie after injuries ravaged the offensive line in the weeks before the start of the regular season. Wednesday, as the Jets readied for their final-month pursuit of a playoff spot, Mitchell was ruled out for the rest of the season.
The Jets placed Mitchell on the non-football injury list and coach Robert Saleh said the fourth-round pick in April’s draft won’t play again this season. And it’s unclear why because Saleh declined to explain why Mitchell was placed on the NFI list.

It’s the latest loss for an offensive line that has been decimated by injury this season; Mitchell is one of six Jets to start at right or left tackle this season. But it also means that for the first time all season, the Jets’ projected starting tackles coming out of training camp will be on the field together: George Fant replaces Mitchell on the right side, with Duane Brown on the left.
Fant was likely to start against the Bills anyway, after Mitchell struggled in last week’s loss to the Vikings and was benched for Fant after after 25 snaps. But it’s still a blow to the Jets’ depth. Saleh said that Mike Remmers will be the Jets’ backup swing tackle off the bench.
This was supposed to be a developmental year for Mitchell, but he was forced into action as the Week 1 starter after right tackle Mekhi Becton was lost for the season early in training camp and Brown started the season on injured reserve. But it came to a strange and mysterious end this week.
Players typically go on the NFI list if they’ve suffered an injury not related to football or while they away from the facility. The list can also be used for players who are dealing with an illness or medical condition.
“I’m not going to get into details on what that is right now,” Saleh said.
Technically, Mitchell would be eligible to return from the NFI list after missing four games, which would make him eligible to play the final game of the season at Miami. But Saleh was definitive about one thing.
“I just know he’s out for the year,” Saleh said. When asked if it was an injury, Saleh said it wasn’t “football related.”
“Again, I’m not going to get into specifics right now,” Saleh said. “Because there’s a lot of things we’re trying to sort out. And for him, too.”
Flu bug hits Jets
Four players missed practice Wednesday because they’re dealing with the flu, according to Saleh: cornerback D.J. Reed, wide receiver Corey Davis, defensivel lineman Micheal Clemons and Fant.

Reed woke up sick on Sunday before the Vikings game and said he needed oxygen on the sideline to play through it. He missed his first snap of the season in the second quarter when he removed himself from the game because he was having difficulty breathing. He returned on the next play and finished the game.
