The Ohio State football program went through its own head coaching change after the 2018 season. Urban Meyer officially retired due to health issues, but he was really forced out. Ryan Day took his place and the Buckeyes haven’t looked back since.
Another Big Ten team might have to oust their coach under unfortunate circumstances. Northwestern is in a lot of trouble with the hazing incidents that have been reported. Pat Fitzgerald was given a two-week suspension, but now Northwestern might reverse course.
The two-week suspension might not be enough as more information leaks out about the incidents. There’s a decent chance now that the Wildcats will have to find a new head coach because Fitzgerald might lose his job over his lack of handling of this problem.
This would be an unfortunate end to someone who is a really good coach. Fitzgerald has been a really good coach for the Wildcats and even led them to a Big Ten Championship Game appearance against the Ohio State football team back in the 2020 season.
If Northwestern were to need a new head coach, the Buckeyes shouldn’t be affected too much. None of their assistants would be looking to make a move right now. Jim Knowles could potentially get a look at the end of the season if the defense plays better this year though.
We’ll see if the university decides to take further action against Fitzgerald. If they do, you can pretty much count the Wildcats out of having any chance to win the Big Ten West. They probably weren’t going to anyway. They’re not going to be very good this year.
For Ohio State, this means there is just one fewer team that could threaten them in their chase to win the Big Ten Title for the first time in three years.
