The Chicago White Sox set a franchise record for consecutive defeats when they dropped their 14th straight game Thursday night with a 14-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field.
On Wednesday night at Wrigley Field, the Sox tied their team’s century-old record for futility when they lost 7-6 to the crosstown Cubs. The 1924 White Sox had set the mark of 13 straight losses from Aug. 9 to Aug. 26 that year.
“Today’s over,” infielder Paul DeJong said. “We can flush it and prepare to win tomorrow. That’s all we can really do, control what we can do in the moment.”
“Today could be a little different, based on the score of the game,” he said of losing so often. “But overall I think the last week we’ve been playing a lot of tight games and just can’t quite pull out that small margin of victory. I think we’ve got to do everything we can each day to win a game. I think that’s what the other teams are doing to us and we have to match that intensity, to be honest.”
After losing 101 games last season, the rebuilding Sox could eclipse the franchise record of 106 losses during the 1970 season.
The injury-plagued White Sox (15-48) started the season by losing 22 of their first 25 games. A brief period of normalcy followed, but the wheels have fallen off once again.
On Thursday, they were out-hit 24-4 as Boston took a lead when Jarren Duran homered off Sox starter Jake Woodford on the game’s second pitch. The Red Sox scored in six out of nine innings.
The odds were against the White Sox coming in, as they were facing Red Sox starter Tanner Houck (1.85 ERA) with a lineup that included Zach DeLoach hitting leadoff and stolen base specialist Duke Ellis making his first big-league start batting ninth and playing center field.
“Every time he left one over and made a mistake, they made us pay for it,” Chicago manager Pedro Grifol said after the loss. “Not a good one today, obviously. Tanner on the other side was really good, he’s had a great year. He had everything going for him. He has a lot of movement, throws a lot of strikes. Kept us off-balanced. We battled, but he was pretty good today.”
Boston led 11-0 and held their hosts to no hits through the first five innings. The White Sox got their first hit and first run in the bottom of the sixth. A bipartisan crowd of 15,568 toggled between cheering for Boston and chanting “Sell the team.”
“You got to believe you’re going to turn it around,” White Sox reliever Danny Mendick said. “That’s kind of what our belief is.”
