Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver was arrested on Saturday night in Montgomery County (Texas) for driving while intoxicated as well as one count of unlawfully carrying a weapon.
A motorist called 911 on a driver, later identified as Oliver, for failing to maintain a lane and for driving dangerously in a 45-mph construction zone.
When a deputy located the vehicle and pulled it over, Oliver was found with an open beer between his legs. A search of his vehicle also led to the discovery of a pistol.
That arrest may lead to Oliver being disciplined by the league which could prove costly when it comes to Oliver’s contract with Buffalo.
According to Michael Ginnitti of Spotrac, Oliver will lose over $80,000 for every game missed due to suspension. More importantly, $6.8 million dollars in salary guarantees will void if the defensive tackle is suspended by the league.
The odds of Buffalo releasing Oliver before the end of his rookie contract are slim, so it is likely that Oliver still receives the remaining $6.8 million on his deal.
The Bills released the following statement early Sunday morning regarding Oliver: “We are aware of the situation and we are gathering more information. We will have no further comment at this point.”
Buffalo selected Oliver with the No. 9 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. In his first season with the Bills, Oliver recorded 43 total tackles, five sacks and eight quarterback hits.
