BIG RAPIDS – The local Michigan 16U softball team made its debut on Saturday in a four-team tournament at Cadillac.

Coach Kevin Brigham’s team went 0-3. One of the Expos losses was 8-4 to Northwest Elite of the Traverse City area.

“We had a close competitive game with them,” Brigham said. “They’re a really good team.”

The Expos lost 4-2 to the eventual tournament winner, Michigan Heat.

“It was another competitive game and that’s another Showcase type team,” Brigham said.

The final game was a 7-0 loss to the host Cadillac Express team.

“It was a meaningless game for us and we did some things different because we knew we were already 0-2,” Brigham said.

Players include Riley Brigham (Kevin’s daughter) of Crossroads, Veronica Lofquist, of Reed City, whom Brigham said is transferring to Evart, Riley Schafer of Reed City, Jaylynn Gray of Big Rapids, and Addy Gray, Lilly Gallinger and Allison Theunick of Evart. There are also girls from Lakeview, Kent City and Marion.

Jace Hoffman from Kent City was the Expos leading hitter at Cadillac and pitched the third game. Jaidyn Hill of Lakeview was another strong hitter.

Theunick had three doubles and a triple.

The Expos head to the Fort Wayne, Ind., area for another tournament this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“We’re going to play great competition down there,” Brigham said. “It’s nice to win games and we try to win every game we play. My main goal is to try to find and play tough competition. We’re only going to get better by playing good teams.

“I’d rather go play good competition and lose rather than mop up competition. We’re trying to get most of these girls ready for their high school careers. By playing the teams we’re playing, that’s how we get better. We had a great winter and ended up winning the last tournament we played in Muskegon.”

Brigham also coaches the Crossroads softball team, but the spring season was canceled because of COVID-19.

“I wish we would have played a little better Saturday but being off a couple of months, the rust was there a little bit,” Brigham said. “We had one practice. From here on out we play every weekend.”

Practices are Sunday afternoon at Big Rapids’ Vogel Field.
