Unionized employees at Jean Coutu Group’s Varennes warehouse have overwhelmingly voted in favour of a strike after owner Metro Inc. ended its COVID-19 premium for workers.

Ninety-nine per cent of the 700 or so workers backed the strike mandate Saturday while refusing to negotiate without the presence of a conciliator, the Confédération des Syndicats Nationaux said Sunday in a statement.

A walkout can begin “when deemed appropriate,” the union said.

“We have been at work throughout the pandemic, we have adopted all methods to limit the spread of the virus and continue to ensure a large share of the supply of drugs in Quebec. We deserve greater respect from the employer, who must negotiate in good faith,” Audrey Benoît, president of the Jean Coutu-CSN pharmacy warehouse workers union, said in the statement.

Benoît is urging the company to return to the negotiating table “with a real desire to move forward.”

Workers are seeking to make gains on issues such as work schedules, insurance coverage, pension plan terms, subcontracting and the use of part-time employees, the CSN said.

Grocer Metro was one of several essential-services retailers across Canada to temporarily boost hourly wages by $2 an hour this spring during the pandemic. It said last week it would eliminate the premium on June 13.

The move came weeks after Metro reported a 45 per cent jump in fiscal second-quarter net income. Pharmacy same-store sales climbed 7.9 per cent, Metro said April 22.
