SPOKANE, Wash. – Oregon fell just short in its first time back on the court in over 10 months, dropping a tightly-contested season-opener, 4-3, at Gonzaga on Saturday at the Stevens Center.
 
How it Happened: The Ducks got off to a strong start, capturing the doubles point behind victories by Rifanty Kahfiani and Uxia Martinez Moral on court No. 1 and Lillian Mould and Janice Tjen at the No. 2 spot. After splitting the first four games, Kahfiani and Martinez Moral won the next four win, 6-2, while Mould and Tjen were tied at three games apiece in their match before taking three of the next four to win, 6-4, and put up a point for the Ducks.
 
Tjen and Martinez Moral kept their solid play going into singles play, with Tjen winning her match, 6-2, 7-6 (1) and Martinez Moral winning 7-5, 6-2. Tjen cruised to an opening set victory before fending off a comeback by the Bulldogs' Kate Ketels by dominating the tiebreaker to clinch the win on court No. 1. In set one of her match, Martinez Moral also held off a late charge to win 7-5, before rolling to a 6-2 set two win.
 
The rest of the Ducks, however, couldn't carry over the momentum from doubles play. The remaining four fell behind early in their opening sets and couldn't recover, as all four fell in straight sets. After falling into an early hole in her second set, Kahfiani cut her deficit to 4-3, but dropped the next two games to lose, 6-2, 6-3, and clinch the match for Gonzaga.
