Another multi-goal deficit delivered the same result for the Devils.
The Pittsburgh Penguins scored the first three goals of the game, and despite the Devils netting a pair to get within one, they lost their ninth straight game in a 4-2 defeat against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.
The Devils have not held a lead in their last eight losses, and during the nine-game losing streak, they lost to the Penguins five times. Saturday’s game ended the season series between the two teams. The Penguins won six meetings.

They managed to pull within 3-2 in the third period, but the Devils missed a golden chance to tie the game in the final seconds when Nico Hischier chipped a shot wide of an open net. Sidney Crosby then sent the puck the length of the ice and hit the open net with 0.1 seconds left.
Goalie Mackenzie Blackwood returned to the lineup on Saturday after missing the previous two games, but the Devils still played short handed. Defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler joined P.K. Subban in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols. Forward Janne Kuokkanen missed the game after taking a shot off his hand on Thursday, and Ty Smith missed his third straight game with an upper body injury.
Jeff Carter and Jared McCann scored in the first period to put the Penguins up 2-0 before the first intermission. Bryan Rust then extended the Penguins’ lead to three with a deflected goal at 7:30 of the second period.
Jack Hughes got the Devils on the board at 8:45 of the second, netting a loose puck after Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith followed Yegor Sharangovich to the right post, leaving a big window for Hughes on the other side.
Miles Wood pulled the Devils within 3-2 at 10:58 of the third period. Ryan Murray faked a shot in the left circle before firing a pass over to Wood in the right circle, where he buried a one-timer.
