CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians scored three runs in the first inning against the Detroit Tigers’ fill-in starter and won the series opener 4-1 Friday night at Progressive Field.
The Tigers’ scheduled starting pitcher, veteran right-hander Julio Teheran was scratched at the last moment. The change was not announced until after the top of the first inning.
The team said Teheran experienced tightness in his triceps while warming up and was pulled from the start as a precaution.
“At the very end of his warmups, the bullpen phone rang and (pitching coach Chris Fetter) told me that Teheran wasn’t feeling great and was unlikely to start the game,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “So we got (Derek) Holland up and running and pulled Teheran from the game. He was willing to pitch, but it wasn’t looking good from what Fett told me and there’s no need to risk further injury.”
Left-hander Derek Holland took Teheran’s place, and promptly allowed three runs in the bottom of the first, although he almost certainly deserved a better fate. The Indians hit two potential, inning-ending double play balls. One of them caromed off the second base bag; on the second, Eddie Rosario chugged down the first-base line to beat the throw by a half-step.
Indians designated hitter Franmil Reyes first the first of two massive home runs against Holland, a two-run, 409-foot shot in the first. He later followed with a 446-foot solo homer to the shrubbery in center against Michael Fulmer in the sixth.
Holland wanted to stay in the game to help save the bullpen, but Hinch turned to Buck Farmer and then Fulmer.
“I was willing to wear it,” Holland said. “I know I’d given up the home run but I want to continue to keep battling and do everything I could to help these guys and save the bullpen. But I’ve got to respect A.J.’s decision and if he calls me I’m going to be ready to go tomorrow.”
Reyes’ blast was the only unquestioned hit allowed by Fulmer, although was tagged for another in the eighth on what could have easily been ruled an error on first baseman Jonathan Schoop. Fulmer struck out five in four strong innings of work.
If Teheran has to go on the injured list, Fulmer could be a candidate to take his spot in the rotation by virtue of having been stretched out on Friday night.
Indians starter Zach Plesac pitched seven scoreless and nearly flawless innings. In five career starts against Detroit, Plesac has allowed only three earned runs in 30 2/3 innings.
The Tigers got on the board in the eighth against Indians reliever Bryan Shaw. Tigers catcher Wilson Ramos greeted him with a 443-foot shot to center, his third home run this year.
Tigers rookie phenom Akil Baddoo went 0-for-2 with a walk.
Up next: The Tigers (3-4) and Indians (3-3) meet again on Saturday at 6:10 p.m. at Progressive Field. Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal (0-0, 3.38 ERA) will face Indians right-hander (1-0, 3.86) in a rematch of last week’s game.
