Game Recap: Football | | by Mike Lund
Missoula, MT – The score wasn't what the Portland State Vikings wanted. But a return to play is what they sought, and what they got. Playing in a real football game for the first time since 2019, the Vikings lost to Montana, 48-7, at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
Despite the loss, PSU was grateful for the opportunity. The Vikings had not competed in 17 months and the game wrapped up their spring season.
Montana had logged just one game, beating Central Washington 59-3 last Saturday.
"I wanted to play a playoff team or an FBS team this spring," said Viking Coach Bruce Barnum. "I wanted tough competition. This had to be preparation for the fall."
The Griz packed it in at the line of scrimmage early making it a tough running day for the Vikings. That also impacted the PSU's ability to look downfield with the pass. Quarterback Davis Alexander was efficient throwing the ball though. He completed 15-25 passes for 193 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Alexander also rushed for 33 yards.
"I knew about their defense. I saw it live. Their front seven will carry that team a long way. I have been in this conference for many moons. With that defense, they are the Griz of old," said Barnum. "We have to get better up front to protect and run against that. And we will. That's what will get us back in the playoffs."
On the other side, Montana's run game looked like it was in mid-season form. The Grizzlies rushed for 248 yards and five touchdowns.
Montana struck first on a 28-yard touchdown run by Xavier Harris with 5:26 left in the first quarter. The Griz led 7-0 at the end of the first and had out-gained the Vikings 128-81.
Montana tacked on three touchdowns in the second quarter to go into halftime with a 27-0 lead. The big play was a 54-yard pass from Cam Humphrey to Gabe Sulser. It was part of a big afternoon for the Griz quarterback. Humphrey finished with 19-26 passing for 239 yards, two TDs and an interception. However, he left the game with an injury in the second half.
The Vikings were backed up late in the second quarter following a punt block. But, roverback David Joseph made a big play, picking off Humphrey pass in the endzone.
Still, the Griz dominated the first half, running 11 more plays and out-gaining PSU, 353-129.
The Viking defense rallied early in the second half, making a fourth-down stop of Montana on its first possession.
Portland State finally got on the board with 11:55 to go in the third quarter. Alexander threw a perfect spiral down the right sideline, hauled in by Mataio Talalemotu, who outran the Griz defense to the endzone for a 73-yard score.
The Vikings were unable to score again. They ran 61 total plays for 293 yards in the game. Montana finished with 76 plays for 511 yards. Each team had one turnover.
Talalemotu and Beau Kelly were the Vikings top receivers. Kelly had five receptions for 61 yards. Talalemotu caught four balls for 92 yards and the score.
PSU ended up rushing 35 times for 100 yards. Dante Chachere and Jobi Malary each had 24 yards on the ground.
Freshman linebacker Parker McKenna led the Vikings with 10 tackles, including one for loss. All-American defensive back Anthony Adams added nine tackles and one for loss. Justice Pagan, also a freshman had nine tackles, including two for losses.
GAME NOTES: Punter Seth Vernon had a big game with punts of 55, 58, 51, 57, 51 and 57 yards. Montana blocked one punt… the game concludes Portland State's spring season. The Vikings will return in the fall, opening the season at Hawai'i on Sept. 4.
