NEW YORK — There’s playing down to the competition, and then playing down to the worst team in baseball.

The Yankees finished doing just that with their 8-7 loss capping off a three-game series defeat at the hands of the hapless Orioles at Yankee Stadium on Sunday.

That was despite two homers and six RBI from catcher Gary Sanchez, hitting ninth. And they wasted two scoreless innings from Chad Green, hours after putting star reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (right rotator cuff strain) on the 10-day injured list.

The Orioles — with the league’s worst record at 43-92 — came back from three separate Yankees (78-58) leads of three runs and hit starting pitcher Corey Kluber hard.

With the Rays’ loss earlier in the day, the Yankees remained 7 1/2 games back of first place in the American League East. And because Boston lost, they stayed at one game up for the top wild-card spot.

It was Baltimore’s first series win in the Bronx since March 2019. They’re 7-9 this year against the Yankees — their most wins vs. any other opponent. The Yankees have accounted for 16.2% of the Orioles’ victories.

After winning 13 in a row, the Yankees have lost six of their last eight games. They haven’t won a series since a two-game sweep in Atlanta on Aug. 23-24. The Blue Jays’ tough lineup heads to the Bronx to begin a four-game set starting Monday.

Kluber lasted only 3 2/3 innings, giving up two runs while striking out five, walking three and allowing four hits. It was his second straight poor start since coming off the injured list, giving the Yankees no more confidence that he’s ready for the postseason.

The Orioles never held a lead until their four-run seventh.

Sanchez’s first homer was a second-inning grand slam in a 3-2 count off O’s starter Keegan Akin, a no-doubter to left field that erased a 1-0 Baltimore lead. He also crushed a two-run shot with one out in the sixth to left for a 7-4 Yankees advantage.

The Orioles took the lead in the seventh. Lefty Andrew Heaney was given a three-run lead but loaded the bases with no outs and then surrendered a line-drive double over the head of Stanton that scored two. Then with one out, Jorge Mateo finished a 12-pitch at-bat by dunking a single into shallow center and past an outstretched LeMahieu, making it 7-7.

Wandy Peralta came in as relief and immediately gave up a liner single to shallow left field to Kelvin Gutierrez that scored a run to make it 8-7.

Gleyber Torres’ lack of awareness at shortstop led to Cedric Mullins’ two-run shot in the sixth that cut the Yankees’ lead to 5-4. In the at-bat prior Kelvin Gutierrez hit a routine, two-out grounder at Torres, who took three steps before finally throwing to first base. Gutierrez was safe, extending the inning for Mullins, who then bombed one to right field. The inning finally ended when Giancarlo Stanton made a spectacular diving catch running toward right-center field.

Torres also dropped a throw at second base on a steal that allowed the runner to advance to third base in the first inning, though catcher Gary Sanchez was charged with the error.
