What was supposed to be the conclusion of the first week of spring training instead ended with Major League Baseball acknowledging the obvious: At least a portion of the exhibition schedule will be lost to the second-longest labor dispute in the sport’s history.
In a one-paragraph statement, MLB said exhibitions will not start before March 5. The schedule originally had called for exhibitions to begin a week from Saturday. The Rangers will lose at least their first seven games – four in Surprise, Ariz., - to the ongoing owner-imposed lockout. The lockout, which began on Dec. 2, will surpass 80 days this weekend. The Rangers had been scheduled to open against Kansas City on Feb. 26.
It also leaves absolutely no margin for error to get in the necessary amount of spring training to start the season on time. Commissioner Rob Manfred said last week that four weeks of spring training were necessary ahead of the season. The Rangers are scheduled to open the 2022 season on March 31 against the New York Yankees at Globe Life Field.
“We regret that, without a collective bargaining agreement in place, we must postpone the start of Spring Training games until no earlier than Saturday, March 5,” said the league’s statement. “All 30 clubs are unified in their strong desire to bring players back to the field and fans back to the stands. The clubs have adopted a uniform policy that provides an option for full refunds for fans who have purchased tickets from the clubs to any Spring Training games that are not taking place. We are committed to reaching an agreement that is fair to each side. On Monday, members of the owners’ bargaining committee will join an in-person meeting with the Players Association and remain every day next week to negotiate and work hard towards starting the season on time.”
If you purchased tickets to a cancelled game for the Texas Rangers through an authorized Surprise Stadium outlet, tickets may be refunded or exchanged. Exchanges are available at the Surprise Stadium box office prior to the originally scheduled event date; otherwise, a refund will be processed. All refunds are subject to the Surprise Stadium refund policy.
Refunds will be automatically processed to the method of payment used at time of purchase. No action is needed to start the refund process, and they are usually completed within 30 days.
