STANFORD, Calif. – No. 17 Washington dropped a four-setter at ninth-ranked Stanford tonight, 24-26, 25-17, 25-20, 25-21, taking its first loss of Pac-12 play and snapping a five-match win streak against the Cardinal. The Huskies lost outside hitter Madi Endsley to injury during the first set, and despite a heroic 20 kill match from Claire Hoffman, UW couldn't keep the Cardinal offense in check.
The Cardinal hit .338 for the match, including over .400 marks in the final two sets. The Huskies (10-3, 2-1 Pac-12) hit .235. The biggest difference on the box score was blocking, where Stanford had 14.0 blocks and UW had only 3.0, all in the first set.
"Adversity finds every team at some point in the season and it found us in that first set," said Head Coach Keegan Cook. "It put us in some situations where we had to make some adjustments and ask some questions. I certainly respect our effort and ability to compete, but not enough performance from the service line or defensively.
"You never know when opportunities will come but when they do are you prepared to seize them? And the answer to that question tonight was no, unfortunately. We know that now and we'll get to work."
With Endsley out, Hoffman carried even more of an offensive load than usual, taking 56 swings and putting 20 away with just three errors to hit .304. She also led the team with 13 digs. Emoni Bush had a dozen kills, hitting .250, and Marin Grote added 11 on a .241 mark. Sophie Summers had seven kills, hitting .357. Ella May Powell had 43 assists and 11 digs.

UP NEXT: Washington finishes its three-match road stretch on Sunday against California at 2 p.m. in Haas pavilion.
SET ONE: Washington scored a couple very loud first two points, as Marin Grote and Sophie Summers got in on back-to-back blocks for 2-1. Emoni Bush had consecutive kills from the left for a 4-3 lead. Stanford scored three straight until missing serve for 5-6. But Stanford then scored another three points and forced a Husky timeout at 5-9. Endsley landed her first kill, and then UW had a 4-0 run to creep back into it. Grote finished a slide and then she and Hoffman teamed for a rejection. A Stanford error made it 10-11. The teams traded a couple two point runs as UW kept pulling within one at 13-14 on a Bush kill, and 14-15, but couldn't quite get even. A scary moment came at 16-18 when Endsley went up and hit down a ball above the net, but she landed on a Stanford player who had come under the net, and went down in pain. Endsley had to sub out for Audra Wilmes, but the Dawgs kept fighting. Powell ended a long rally with a dump to tie it at 19-19, the first tie since 4-4. UW then had a Bush kill and a Stanford error to take its first lead at 22-21. The Dawgs got to set point on a quick strike from Summers in the middle. The Huskies missed serve, but got another chance as Hoffman hammered one for 25-24. Hoffman then ended it after a terrific dig from Powell and a Bays bump set, swinging off the block and down for 26-24.
The Huskies gritted out the win with 22 digs, hitting .220 compared to .182 for the Cardinal. Bush had six kills and Hoffman had four, while Powell and Hoffman each had six digs.
SET TWO: A Hoffman hammer made it 2-0 to start the second set. Kills from Bush and Hoffman, and then a joust won by Powell made it 5-3 Dawgs. The Cardinal made a run with four in a row to force a Husky timeout at 6-9. Summers put one down from Powell for 8-10, but Stanford added two more to its lead at 8-12. Hoffman crushed a long Bays bump set for 10-13, but another 3-0 Stanford run forced UW's last timeout at 10-16. Kills by Grote and Summers kept UW within shouting distance, but Stanford got some more help with an ace off the tape for 13-20. Hoffman cranked another down then went offspeed for consecutive kills for 16-22. But the Cardinal wouldn't waver in closing it out, 25-17.
The Huskies hit .229 in the set but Stanford improved to a .375 mark as UW went without a block in the frame. Hoffman notched five kills.
SET THREE: Stanford held a 6-4 lead through the first ten points of the third set. Hoffman lasered one from the left and Grote hit an overpass for a kill for 7-9. Another Hoffman kill was followed by an ace for 10-12, but the Cardinal had the next two for 10-14 and UW took timeout. Molly Wilson subbed in and a tough serve helped Bush finish one for 12-15, but a pair of Stanford points made the gap five. The Huskies pulled within three again at 15-18 but then missed serve and made an attack error for 15-20, and needed their final timeout. Another Hoffman kill was backed up by an ace from Olivia Mikkelsen for 18-21, but Stanford earned a block on the next rally to stem the momentum. Stanford got to set point at 19-24, Bush saved one with a kill but the next point went Stanford's way for the 25-20 finish.
The Cardinal again outhit the Dawgs, .419 to .182 despite six kills on nine swings from Hoffman. Blocks were 6.0 to zero in Stanford's favor.
SET FOUR: Hoffman tallied two more kills to start the third and then the Dawgs won an incredible rally with a Grote finish off the block for 3-all. A Powell finish off a tight pass and a Stanford error made it 6-5 Dawgs. Bush and Summers connected for a two-point lead at 8-6, but the Cardinal had a 3-0 run to go back up one. Hoffman leveled it at 10-10 with a swipe off the block. The teams were tied at every point up to 14-14 when Stanford scored three, but UW got back within one on a Summers transition quick kill. Grote finished for 19-20, but Stanford had a sideout and then blocked a Grote slide try for 19-22 and UW took time. Hoffman finished a big rally out of the back for 20-22 and her 20th kill, but again Stanford got the sideout, and then the Huskies overpassed the next serve and it was put away for match point at 20-24. Bush saved one with a sharp kill, but the Huskies couldn't extend it, falling 21-25.
The Dawgs hit .344 in the fourth but Stanford remained hot, hitting .417.
