The Athletic has live coverage of Argentina vs. Mexico

Argentina take on Mexico on Saturday having lost their opening game of the World Cup to Saudi Arabia.

That puts them in a difficult position going into their second game. This is especially the case given the result between Poland and Saudi Arabia earlier on Saturday.

But does that put Lionel Messi and Co at risk of elimination if they lose on Saturday? The Athletic explains below.

Will Argentina be out of the World Cup if they lose to Mexico?

Yes. Incredibly, one of the tournament favourites cannot afford to lose to Mexico tonight if they want to go to the latter stages.

A defeat would leave them on no points, with both Poland — after their win against Saudi Arabia — and Mexico on four. That means they would not be able to catch them in the last game.

What about a draw?

A draw would be more positive but still leave them in a very difficult position going into the final round of games.

They would be on one point, with Mexico on two, Saudi Arabia on three and Poland on four.

That means if Argentina beat Poland, they would have to overturn their better goal difference — which means they would have to win by three goals.

Alternatively, they could rely on Mexico and Saudi Arabia to draw and hope to better the latter’s goal difference. The truth, though, is that they would not have their own fate in their hands.

A win is the only outcome that puts them in a position whereby they know a win of any type would take them into the last-16.
