WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College women's basketball team saw four players finish in double figures, but the Knights dropped an 81-67 contest at Saint Mary's University.

"We were in the battle today but had some key defensive breakdowns. Things we will focus on and improve for our upcoming Hamline game," said Carleton head coach Tammy Metcalf-Filzen.

Amelia Solt (Fy./Loveland, Colo./Thompson Valley) had a game-high 18 points to lead Carleton (1-4, 0-4 MIAC), which saw Aiana Whitfield (Sr./Richfield, Minn./Benilde St.-Margaret's) tally a season-best 17 points. Jasmine Choi (Jr./Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo) contributed 16 points, while Emma Henry (Jr./Prior Lake, Minn./Academy of Holy Angels) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.

Saint Mary's (2-2, 2-2 MIAC) was paced by Alyssa Coleman's 17-point effort off the bench, with all of those points coming during the second half. Ashley Steveler added 15 points, with Izzy Goettelman and Brooklyn Paulsen chipping in 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Cardinals shot 47 percent overall, including 12-of-31 from 3-point range. Saint Mary's benefited from 17 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second-chance points. The Knights connected at a 41.1 percent clip but were only 6-of-20 from long range.

The Cardinals led 12-10 with 5:00 remaining in the first quarter, but the two teams combined to miss 21-of their next-22 field goal attempts with the lone points over that stretch scored by Solt with a jumper in the lane and two free throws.

Whitfield gave Carleton a 15-12 lead after draining a 3-pointer at the 7:32 mark of the second quarter, but the Cardinals suddenly found their touch, making 5-of-7 shots from beyond the arc over the remainder of the quarter.

Carleton trailed 31-25 at halftime and faced a nine-point deficit early in the third quarter when Margie Clauss (Jr./Minneapolis, Minn./Washburn) drained a 3-pointer that sparked the Knights' on a 10-0 run that gave the visitors a 37-36 lead with 6:50 still to play in the period.

Saint Mary's closed the quarter with a 16-4 run and did not trail again.

Carleton pulled within 62-58 when Clauss hit a free throw with 3:50 left in the game, but the Cardinals were red-hot down the stretch, making their final six shots and going 6-of-8 at the charity stripe.

Up Next for the Knights
Carleton travels to Hamline University for a 7:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday, Dec. 7.
