A severe storm wreaked havoc on the Bay Area late Monday evening through early Tuesday morning, causing about 75,000 PG&E customers to lose power in the region, company representatives wrote.
“Overnight, portions of the Central Coast, South Bay and Central Valley were particularly hard hit with wind, rain and more than 100 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes,” a Jan. 10 PG&E news release said. Outages in the Bay Area have “significantly” spiked due to these lightning strikes, as well as 70 mph gusts, they wrote in an email update.
As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, 75,808 Bay Area customers are in the dark, with the leading number of outages in the South Bay and Peninsula.
The number of PG&E customers without power by region are:
-San Francisco: 3,909
-Peninsula: 15,520
-North Bay: 6,198
-East Bay: 3,545
-South Bay: 46,636
-Bay Area: 75,808
This barrage of power outages is nothing new, though: On Jan. 4, more than 95,000 customers in the Bay Area lost power during one of California’s many storm events, while the number of outages swelled to about 174,000 across Northern and Central California, SFGATE previously reported.
Experts recommend having flashlights and batteries on hand, stocking LED candles and keeping cellphones charged. For more information, check PG&E’s website on how to prepare for power outages. You can also check if power is out in your area by referring to PG&E’s outage map.
