CU Buffs lose Seydou Traore to transfer portal, add JUCO lineman - BuffZone

When Colorado brought in Seydou Traore as a transfer in January, he appeared to be the type of weapon that could make impact for the offense.

Traore’s time at CU didn’t last long, however.

On Sunday, Traore, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound tight end, put his name back into the transfer portal. He is the 30th Colorado player to go into the portal since the spring game on April 22 and the 43rd since the portal window opened on April 15.

Also on Sunday, former Butler (Kan.) Community College offensive lineman Kareem Harden announced his verbal commitment to the Buffs.

Traore, who came to CU from Arkansas State, was one of 21 transfers from four-year schools to join the Buffs in January and the fourth to go back into the portal after just one semester in Boulder.

Last year at Arkansas State, Traore earned first-team All-Sun Belt Conference honors after catching 50 passes for 655 yards and four touchdowns. He was one of only six tight ends in the Football Bowl Subdivision to catch at least 50 passes.

Throughout the offseason, Traore appeared to build a good rapport with his new teammates, but tight ends coach Tim Brewster publicly challenged Traore during the second week of spring drills in early April.

“Ziko’s a very gifted, talented player,” Brewster said. “He doesn’t understand right now how to work and how to push on every snap. He can flash and really do some good things and then he can take a step back; he can take his foot off the gas pedal. I like to say, are you hungry or are you starving? We need more out of him. … I need him to be a better performer, giving more effort every single day for him to do what he wants to do and for us to do what we got. He’s got ability.”

Traore will now look to maximize his ability elsewhere. With Traore’s departure, the Buffs currently have just three tight ends on scholarship: Caleb Fauria, Erik Olsen and Louis Passarello.

Harden is a 6-foot-4, 315-pound lineman who visited Boulder earlier this month. He had several scholarship offers, including from Illinois and South Florida. He played in eight games for Butler last season.

CU has lost several offensive linemen to the transfer portal in the past week, but Harden is the second new commit this week. The Buffs currently have 12 offensive linemen projected on scholarship for next season.

Overall, CU has 63 projected scholarship players for this season, leaving 22 open spots.
