The Mavericks were eliminated from reaching the play-in tournament Friday night, and as a result the Knicks may not wind up with a first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Though they were still in contention for the 10th and final seed in the Western Conference, the Mavericks sat a number of top players and played star Luka Doncic just one quarter in a 115-112 home loss to the Bulls on Friday night.

The Knicks hold the right to the Mavericks’ first-round pick as part of the 2019 Kristaps Porzingis trade, but only if it isn’t in the top 10.

There is a chance Dallas’ pick could slide back during the lottery, although right now it is 10th.

The Knicks sent their lottery protected first-round pick to the Trail Blazers in the Josh Hart trade.

If the draft pick doesn’t convey this year it would have the same protections the next two years.

After that, it would become a second-round selection.

Kyrie Irving, Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, Josh Green and Christian Wood didn’t play for Dallas and Doncic came out in the opening minute of the second quarter and didn’t return.

Coach Jason Kidd called it an “organization decision.”

The Bulls and Mavericks entered the night tied for the 10th-worst record in the league.

This isn’t completely new territory for Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

In 2018, he was fined $600,000 for admitting on a podcast that he told his players, “losing is our best option,” in order to land a better draft pick.

Cuban’s comments that Jalen Brunson’s parents got in the way of the Mavericks bringing back the point guard, who signed with the Knicks last summer, aren’t going to bother Brunson, according to teammate and close friend Josh Hart.

This week, Cuban suggested that Rick Brunson, hired by the Knicks to join coach Tom Thibodeau’s staff last June, convinced his son to leave the Mavericks and sign a four-year, $104 million contract with the Knicks.

“Where it went south was when Rick took over, when the parent took over, or parents took over,” Cuban told reporters.

Cuban said the Mavericks were never given an opportunity to negotiate with Brunson or his agents after he hit free agency.

The owner also disputed the notion that Brunson was willing to sign a four-year, $56 million extension with the Mavericks as recently as January of last year, which Brunson has said was the case.

“Jalen’s a smart dude. Jalen knows the situation he was in the best,” Hart said Friday before the Knicks’ 113-105 loss to the Pelicans. “If you know JB, JB is someone who is fun-loving, someone who has been around the business, obviously with his dad being in the league. The coolest thing about their relationship is that Jalen is his own person. He makes his own decisions. I don’t think he’s really worried too much about those comments. I think he’s very happy with where is right now. I Think he’s very happy being here.”

Former Villanova teammate Kris Jenkins voiced his support of Brunson on Twitter.

“Man the lies ….. you refused to offer him the contract he asked you ….. multiple times this is sick behavior Mark,” Jenkins tweeted.
