This trip into the Redsverse will look at what happened when the 1994 strike was avoided and the season continued as scheduled.
Before diving in, let’s take a look at what happened during this time in Reds history. On August 12, 1994, the Major League Baseball Strike began. All games were canceled. The strike centered around the failure of owners and the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) to agree on a new labor deal.
The strike continued for 34 days, into September. Finally, on September 14, 1994, Commissioner Bud Selig officially canceled the season, postseason and World Series. This was the first time the World Series wouldn’t be played since 1904.
Cincinnati lost a great season due to the strike. On August 11, 1994, Reds manager Davey Johnson had guided Cincinnati to a 66-48 record, good enough for first place in the newly formed NL Central.
Cincinnati was led by a strong starting line up of: Deion Sanders, Barry Larkin, Hal Morris, Kevin Mitchell, Bret Boone, Tony Fernández, Reggie Sanders, Eddie Taubensee. The starting rotation was led by José Rijo and John Smiley. The bullpen was anchored by relievers Héctor Carrasco, Chuck McElroy, Johnny Ruffin and closer Jeff Brantley.
