Murfreesboro Strike & Spare has closed its original location and plans to open in the new space at Stones River Town Centre by mid-September — possibly sooner — confirmed general manager Phillip Cox.
“We are scheduled to open Sept. 10 at the new location, but that’s a tentative date right now,” Cox said.
Strike & Spare will now be located in the former Sears store at Stones River Town Centre, 1720 Old Fort Parkway. The Sears store closed in February 2019.
The new location boasts over 52,000 square feet, which has allowed the company to expand offerings and create a full entertainment center.
More than bowling
“The new center will have 26 bowling lanes, bumper cars, laser tag, roller skating and three other attractions: Time Freak (a 3D maze), Laser Frenzy (a laser maze) and a virtual reality roller coaster,” Cox said.
There will also be a 2,500-square-foot arcade, and a full bar and grill inside. But don’t expect the same pub grub at the new location.
“We’ll have a meat-and-three for lunch and lots of fresh items on the menu,” Cox explained. “The new menu will definitely be better than what we had been serving (at the old location) due to the enhanced kitchen.”
The diner will have an entrance directly into the mall and will be the only place mall patrons can sit in a dining room and eat inside the mall, Cox said.
Patrons can enter from the side nearest the movie theater as well as the Stones River Mall Boulevard.
The prices for attractions will be affordable, too, Cox said. You’ll be able to enter and eat, or take in some of the attractions. But this center will offer wrist bands that allow customers to stay all day and play for one price: $15 for weekdays and $20 on weekends.
And if you’re looking for a place to host parties, the entertainment venue is booking events now, he said. COVID-19 safety practices will be observed, too, including social distancing and required masks.
Plans announced: Murfreesboro Strike & Spare moving to new location by early summer
The move is bittersweet
While the move from Southeast Broad Street has been bittersweet, Cox said Murfreesboro Strike & Spare just needed more room than the 60-year-old building could offer.
Built in the late 1950s, the bowling center originally had 12 lanes upstairs and 12 downstairs. In the late 1960s, the building was expanded to its current size to accommodate 12 more lanes for a total of 36.
Two decades ago, Strike & Spare took over operations at the Broad Street bowling center. Since then, more than a dozen Strike & Spare centers have opened.
In 2017, Strike & Spare renovated the facility. Adding space onto the old building wasn’t an option, so the floor space was reconfigured to offer more room. Seating and carpeting were replaced, too.
A brand-new scoring system was installed, and an arcade with redeemable tickets was added as well.
