SAN LEANDRO — Registered nurses at San Leandro Hospital and Alameda Hospital in Alameda will launch a five-day strike Wednesday over their stalled contract talks, saying management has acted in bad faith and put patients at risk through understaffing, the California Nurses Association has announced.

The union plans pickets, rallies, a vigil and car caravans outside the two hospitals over the five days.

Nurses plan similar actions outside Highland Hospital in Oakland, where they are represented by the Service Employees International Union Local 1021.

The CNA has been in talks for two years with Alameda Health System, which manages San Leandro, Alameda and Highland hospitals.

“Our patients are some of the most marginalized people in our communities and we have an obligation to stand up for them and to demand that the county provide us the tools we need to keep ourselves safe, our patients safe, and our communities safe,” Mawata Kamara, a registered nurse at San Leandro Hospital and a member of union’s board of directors, said in a release. “We do not take lightly the decision to strike during a pandemic, but we feel we have no choice if we are going to get the changes we need to provide the very best care for our patients during this critical time.”

The nurses association represents 175 registered nurses at Alameda Hospital and 150 registered nurses at San Leandro Hospital. It also represents 800 registered nurses working in San Joaquin County who are also scheduled to go on strike.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
