Undefeated no more.
Russell Wilson had an astonishing 1st half but he otherwise threw three brutal interceptions to offset his three touchdowns to Tyler Lockett. The Seattle Seahawks drop to 5-1 on the season after blowing a 34-24 lead to Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals (5-2). A 37-34 overtime classic that sees Seattle’s NFC West lead trimmed to .5 game and with a brutal next four games ahead, the outlook on the season is a bit shakier than if they had won.
Seattle had a 20-7 lead and 27-17 at halftime, but costly turnovers and bad miscues on defense and special teams kept Arizona in it all game long. Even when it looked like a tie was in the cards following a missed Zane Gonzalez field goal in overtime, DK Metcalf had a game-winning touchdown called back for holding and Russell Wilson threw his third interception on the very next play. Doesn’t get much crazier than that.
And yes, the Seahawks suffered several key injuries and so did the Cardinals. Par for the course at that stadium.
1st Half
Russell Wilson aired it out right away with a 35-yard dime to Tyler Lockett, who made a stunning one-handed catch over Patrick Peterson. In this six-play, 75-yard drive, Lockett had three catches out of five Wilson pass attempts and scored a simple touchdown to give the Seahawks an instant lead. 7-0 Seahawks.
Arizona went three-and-out on their opening possession, a pleasant change given the defensive issues for the Seahawks throughout the season. The next Seahawks possession saw Russell Wilson’s would-be touchdown pass to Greg Olsen rightly overturned to no touchdown after replays showed Olsen was not in bounds and frankly wasn’t close. Two more incomplete passes led to a 41-yard field goal from Jason Myers. 10-0 Seahawks.
Back came Kyler Murray with a 3rd and 10 conversion on a scramble. A handful of plays later, Murray launched a deep shot to DeAndre Hopkins and he out-positioned Quinton Dunbar for a 35-yard score. 10-7 Seahawks.
A 9-play, 49 yard drive got the Seahawks into field goal range again but no further. Jason Myers banged home a 44-yard kick to extend the lead back to six. 13-7 Seahawks.
After a trick play run with Kenyan Drake gained nine yards but was nullified due to a holding penalty, DeAndre Hopkins was stripped by Poona Ford on a quick pass. KJ Wright was there for the recovery in Arizona territory. Unfortunately, back came the Cardinals defense with a pick in the end zone by Budda Baker. Ordinarily this would be a touchdown since Wilson stumbled trying to chase after him. But DK Metcalf had a heroic tackle that saved seven points, as the Cardinals offense could not score on four tries in a goal-to-go situation.
How big would that tackle prove to be? Well the Seahawks still had 97 yards to go but got all 97 in just six plays. Russell Wilson dashed for 34 on a beautiful triple-option play to get them to near midfield. Will Dissly had a 28-yard gain turning upfield and deep into Arizona territory. Two plays later, Carlos Hyde scored on a toss play that proved to be a touchdown in the eyes of everyone except Al Michaels, whose brain just broke and he thought he stepped out of bounds. 20-7 Seahawks.
Back came the Cardinals with their own six-play scoring drive. A horrible busted zone coverage saw Dan Arnold get open and rumble inside the 10. The next snap was a Murray touchdown to Christian Kirk, who was wide open thanks to horrible defense by Shaquill Griffin. 20-14 Seahawks.
Russ. Lockett. Holy shit. 27-14 Seahawks.
The Seahawks were all too willing to concede field goal range to the Cardinals and Zane Gonzalez did boot one through from 49 yards out. 27-17 Seahawks.
2nd Half
Arizona wasted no time getting into Seahawks territory, but the drive stalled thanks to a KJ Wright screen detonation and a clutch 3rd down stop by Ugo Amadi when Kyler Murray scrambled in search of the sticks. The Seahawks got into Cards territory and they were unable to get into field goal range. DUELING PUNTS! DEFENSE?! IN THIS ECONOMY?!
Seattle pinned Arizona deep, courtesy of Michael Dickson. It didn’t matter because the refs created a fictitious roughness penalty out of thin air on Bobby Wagner on what would’ve been a three-and-out. It extended the drive and the Cards marched down the field. Touchdown run for Kyler Murray. 27-24 Seahawks.
In the 4th quarter, Wilson drove the Seahawks into Cardinals territory and into field goal range, but threw a horrible interception to Patrick Peterson on a 3rd down play in the end zone. DK Metcalf broke off his route and there appeared to be a miscommunication that was costly. No worries, as Quandre Diggs picked off an inaccurate Murray throw on the next play.
Even with a short field, the Seahawks took over 5 minutes off the clock on a 12-play, 45-yard drive that ended in a 4th and 2 touchdown to Tyler Lockett that is out of this world even on a night when Lockett was out of this world. 34-24 Seahawks with 6:44 left.
Arizona bizarrely took a lot of time off the clock only to wind up in field goal range. Zane Gonzalez’s 52-yard field goal was good but a stupid (correct) leverage penalty on Benson Mayowa meant taking the points off the board. Christian Kirk got the touchdown a few plays later and with 2:28 to go, Arizona still had its full set of timeouts and the lead down to 3. 34-31 Seahawks.
Russell Wilson rolled out for nine yards to set up a Carlos Hyde 2nd and 1 conversion on the other side of the two-minute warning. Arizona used its first timeout after that play. One-yard run for Hyde on 1st and 10 causes another timeout taken by the Cards. Seven-yard run for Hyde makes it 3rd and 2 and Arizona is out of timeouts. This is the game right here... did not get it. Arizona gets the ball back at their own 20 with :52 left.
First down throw to Fitzgerald for a catch of 11 and they spike it with :38 to go. QB draw with Murray and another spike with :24 left. Kirk with the catch to the Seahawks’ 38 with :17 to go. Draw with Edmonds to the 24 and they get the first down and spike with :02 to go. Zane Gonzalez for the tie... 44-yard attempt... overtime. 34-34.
Overtime
Seahawks won the coin toss thanks to Geno Smith’s outstanding guessing abilities. From their own 25, Carlos Hyde with the checkdown grab for a gain of eight. Bad time for the first sack of the game. Makes it 3rd and 8. CATCH by David Moore with Dre Kirkpatrick draped all over him. Gain of 18 yards. Pitch to Hyde loses several yards as Wilson stumbles. 2nd and 16... one-handed grab by Dallas to midfield. 3rd and 6... false start by Shell. 3rd and 11. Sacked on a blitz.
Ball at the Arizona 28. Fitzgerald with a gain of 7. Run defense breaks on a big run by Chase Edmonds. Just jamming it down Seattle’s throats inside the 20. Ryan Neal stops Murray for a loss of 5. They’ll just kick it now. There was almost a delay of game but a timeout was called by the Cards. From 41 yards out for Gonzalez... NO GOOD!!!! UNREAL!
2:42 to go and the Seahawks get the ball back. Lockett for a first down. Dangerous throw to Hyde loses 4. 2nd and 14 at their own 38. Unbelievably improv by Lockett to get the first down on a ridiculous throw by Wilson. Lockett juked two Cardinals and they get into Arizona territory. Blitz and Wilson throws it away. 2nd and 10... timeout Seahawks.
Another blitz and incomplete. TOUCHDOWN DK METCALF ON A SCREEN!! But David Moore committed an obvious holding penalty. So it’s 3rd and 14. Picked by Isaiah Simmons with :48 left. Cards have it at the Seattle 49 with :57 to go. Hopkins to the 40. Couple of plays to the 29 and then a weird deep pass on 3rd down that is incomplete. Now they kick the field goal. Winner. 37-34 Cardinals.
Seahawks injury report
RG Damien Lewis injured his knee in the 2nd quarter but returned in the same quarter.
RB Chris Carson hurt his foot at some point in the 1st half. He did not return.
CB Shaquill Griffin suffered a concussion and was replaced by Tre Flowers. He did not return.
S Ryan Neal was banged up in the 4th quarter on a 4th and 1 conversion. He was replaced by Damarious Randall but returned on the same drive.
Next week’s opponent
