A loss in this year’s TAPPS volleyball playoffs won’t necessarily eliminate a team.
In fact, a team that loses in the state semifinals could potentially still win a state championship. Or a team could win a state title without having to play the championship match.
Those are all possibilities because of the coronavirus pandemic.
On Thursday, the state’s largest governing body for private school athletics released its guidelines for what will happen in the volleyball playoffs if a team that wins a postseason match can’t play in the next round for COVID-19 reasons.
For each round, TAPPS said that a team that lost in the previous round will be given the option to advance if the team that defeated them cannot play. If that losing team does not wish to advance, then the next round will result in a bye for the remaining team.
When it comes to determining which teams will play in a state championship match, the TAPPS guidelines say that a team that was defeated in the previous round will be given the option to advance if the team that defeated them cannot play. If that losing team does not wish to advance, then the state championship match will not be played and the remaining team will be declared the champion.
The team that won its semifinal match but could not play in the championship match will be declared a runner-up. The two remaining final four schools will remain tied for third place.
Once district certification has occurred — the deadline for that is Nov. 5 — then no teams will be added to the playoff bracket and no changes in seeding will be made. The TAPPS state tournament is scheduled for Nov. 18-21.
