The unionized nursing staff at St. Mary Medical Center may hit the picket line.
Nurses, who are affiliated with the Pennsylvania Association of Staff Nurses and Allied Professionals (PASNAP), voted on Tuesday and Wednesday on whether to strike. The vote tallies were to be tabulated on Wednesday night.
The union nurses and hospital owner Trinity Health have been bargaining since last October, only months after voting to join a union following a contentious campaign.
Sources with knowledge of the talks have said roughly 775 nurses want improvements to staffing, restoration of nurse-led response teams for patients, pay rates to match other Trinity facilities, and better protections in the age of COVID-19.
A strike authorization vote would add pressure to contract talks.
“We are aware that PASNAP has called for a strike authorization vote. St. Mary remains committed to negotiating in good faith with PASNAP to ensure we arrive at an initial contract for our nurses that is fair to all and sustainable. We believe that continuing our dialogue will do more to advance that goal for both our nurses and St. Mary than a strike, or a strike threat, would,” said Christy McCabe, director of marketing for Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic.
At previous events, nurses have pointed to the fact that St. Mary Medical Center is among the most profitable hospitals connected to Trinity Health, bringing in an average of $58 million a year.
PASNAP nurses at Lower Bucks Hospital recently avoided a strike when a new contract was reached between union members and hospital owner Prime Healthcare.
