The Governor’s Highway Safety Program has launched its annual Halloween Booze It & Lose It campaign.
The extra enforcement will run through Sunday with high-visiblity checkpoints and patrols meant to slow down speeders and take drunken drivers off the road.
More than 500 law enforcement agencies are participating, said Miracle King, a communications specialist with the Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
October is the most dangerous month on North Carolina roads and highways. High-visibility enforcement reduces drunken driving fatalities by as much as 20%, King said.
“Historically, drunk driving accounts for nearly one-third of vehicle-related fatalities across North Carolina,” King said. “The number of pedestrian deaths has shown a steady increase over the past five years.”
