Could the Patriots lose three games in a row?
The Patriots are trying to break a two-game losing streak against the 49ers at 4:25 p.m. at Gillette Stadium. New England is a two-point favorite, but the line has dropped three points from where it opened.
If the 49ers win, then it will mark the first time New England has lost a third consecutive game since Oct. 13, 2002. Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" was the No. 1 single on the Billboard Top 100 that day.
New England has lost back-to-back games 11 times since, but they have never had a three-game losing streak. Clarkson was on to something.
Some people wait a lifetime – for a moment like this.
Here is what happened the last time the Patriots lost three straight games.
When was the Patriots' last three-game losing streak?
On Oct. 13, 2002, Green Bay – led by Brett Favre – beat New England 28-10 at Gillette Stadium. Tom Brady threw three interceptions in the loss.
New England – which had won the first of six Super Bowls with Brady and Bill Belichick the previous season – had lost the previous two weeks to the Chargers and Dolphins. Drew Brees and Jay Fiedler were the quarterbacks in those games.
Patriots' last four-game losing streak
The Patriots had a bye week after that loss to the Packers, and they lost a fourth straight game on Oct. 27, 2002, to the Denver Broncos. Brian Griese passed for 229 yards and a TD against Brady – his former college teammate – and the Broncos won 24-16.
New England finished 9-7 that season and missed the playoffs.
How many times have Pats lost back-to-back games?
The Patriots also lost back-to-back games against the Titans and Jets in that 2002 season. It was the first of 11 instances where the Patriots have lost back-to-back games since.
New England lost back-to-back games twice in the 2015 and 2018 seasons, and the Texans and Chiefs beat the Pats in back-to-back weeks in 2019.
The Patriots, however, always managed to break those streaks in the regular season.
Patriots' current two-game losing streak
The Patriots season has been affected by COVID-19, and that led the NFL to move their game against Kansas to Oct. 5. The Chiefs beat New England 26-10 on Oct. 5.
Denver beat New England 18-12 on Oct. 18 in a game where Cam Newton returned to the lineup.
San Francisco is 3-3 but is coming off a 24-16 against the Los Angeles Rams. The 49ers are led by former Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, which makes Sunday's game even more interesting.
Will Garoppolo be the one to hand Belichick and the Pats a third straight loss?
This the moment we have been waiting for.
