Rays lose on Yankees’ walkoff homer in 11th inning - Tampa Bay Times

NEW YORK — The ending was sudden, and painful, as they tend to be in these situations.

The Rays lost 5-3 to the Yankees on Tuesday when Andrew Kittredge hung a slider over the middle of the plate, and Clint Frazier hit a two-run homer with two outs in the 11th inning.

The challenge now for the Rays — who came into the game on a remarkable roll, having won 16 of 17 and holding a majors-best 35-20 record — is to not let the frustrating loss linger.

“It’s kind of unfortunate to end like that,” Kittredge said. “Obviously, we’re rolling pretty well right now, trying to keep that going. But this isn’t a step backwards by any means for us. We’re going to come out (Wednesday) and hopefully get another win.”

The Rays have done so much right during this run, Kittredge said they naturally were confident they would find a way to pull this one out.

And their relievers, after a messy but effective seven-inning outing by Tyler Glasnow, gave them ample opportunity. J.P. Feyereisen got out of a jam in the eighth. Pete Fairbanks escaped the ninth after walking two with two out. Kittredge left the bases loaded in the 10th and was two strikes from getting through the 11th.

“Our relievers were tremendous,” manager Kevin Cash said. “Our pitching all night was really good.”

The bigger problem was that they couldn’t get any hits.

The Rays had only three on the night, and none after the fifth inning. There was a Brandon Lowe leadoff single off starter Domingo German’s glove and Austin Meadows’ team-leading 13th home run — his fourth in his last five games — in the first. There was Kevin Kiermaier’s first homer of the season to tie the score in the fifth after the Rays fell behind for the first time in a week.

And though they walked six times, there was no more hits, their 1-for-10 performance with runners in scoring position a stark reminder.

“We couldn’t get anything going,” Cash said. “It was like we were teetering with them breaking something open or getting some runs, but we just never could.”

They also made a costly mistake on the bases, hurting their chances for a rally in the sixth, when Meadows got caught for the second out going back to first after breaking as a pitch got away from catcher Gary Sanchez. The problem was that Ji-Man Choi was on second and he wasn’t going anywhere.

“Kind of a messed-up play,” Cash said. “I really can’t fault Austin at all. He’s anticipating to advance and just kind of got caught out there in no man’s land.”

Glasnow did well to get through seven innings.

He had blood on his pants, wiping his thumb that had a small cut — the result of his grip on the curveball that happens frequently, but bled more Tuesday.

And he totally lost his way in the third, going from retiring the first eight Yankees to allowing four straight to reach with two outs, giving up runs on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch.

“I just think I got out of rhythm,” he said. ‘Kind of today, in general, I think it was hard for me to get a feel for most of my pitches. But it got better after that.”

He had one other costly mistake, allowing a two-out homer in the fourth to Miguel Andujar to put the Yankees up 3-2.

Though the Rays came back to tie, they never could go ahead. And their pitchers could only hold the Yankees off for so long — especially under the current extra-inning rules with a runner starting on second.

“That’s the game,” Cash said. “It’s tough. You’ve got to be perfect.”
