Shohei Ohtani & Jared Walsh homer, Angels lose in 10 innings to Tigers - Halos Heaven

The Angels got home runs from their two best hitters, but it wasn’t enough to complete a sweep of the Tigers. Detroit rallied for a pair of runs in the 10th inning to salvage a game of the weekend series in Anaheim, winning 5-3 on Sunday afternoon.

Raisel Iglesias retired Detroit in order in the ninth inning, but started the 10th inning with an infield single and walk which, combined with the free runner to start the inning, loaded the bases. Daz Cameron followed with a two-run single to provide the winning margin for the Tigers.

The loss snapped the Angels’ three-game win streak and six-game home win streak.

It spoiled a game in which Shohei Ohtani homered for a fifth consecutive start at designated hitter, a two-run shot to tie the game in the fifth inning off Casey Mize. Ohtani is now tied for the major league lead with 23 home runs, which is his career high.

Ohtani in his last six games has six home runs, and in the only game he didn’t homer in that stretch he struck out five while allowing only a run in his six innings.

Ohtani’s durability has been the most pleasant surprise of 2021, playing in 70 of the Angels’ 72 games. With the gloves fully off, he’s thrived in an every day role.

To put his daily impact in different terms, Ohtani has batted 272 times this season, and he’s faced 222 batters as a pitcher. The batter-pitcher matchup is fundamental to the sport, and nobody in baseball has been a part of more than Ohtani.

Shane Bieber leads major league pitchers with 383 batters faced, and Marcus Semien leads all batters with 316 plate appearances. Ohtani has been the batter or pitcher for 494 plate appearances this season. Ohtani impacts the game more often that anyone else.

Jared Walsh also hit his 18th home run of the season on Sunday, continuing his power barrage he started last September. Ohtani and Walsh are the 12th and 13th Angels players to hit at least 18 home runs through 72 team games, and just the third set of teammates to do it, joining Troy Glaus, Mo Vaughn, and Garret Anderson in 2000, and Albert Pujols and Mike Trout in 2015.

Up next

The Angels have Monday off, but continue the homestand with a pair of games against the Giants beginning Tuesday night at the Big A, with Andrew Heaney starting the opener. Ohtani starts on the mound on Wednesday.
