I feel for everyone who was hoping today would be a new day for the Royals. Because that optimistic thinking went out the window quickly when the Rangers jumped on Brady Singer thanks to self-inflicting misuses by the young right-hander.
The first batter Singer faced was Isiah Kiner-Falefa who grounded back to the pitcher. Singer’s throw to first was off the mark putting on the Rangers’ lead off guy. Two batters later, to Adolis Garcia, Singer threw an 0-2 pitch right down Broadway and Garcia made him pay with a triple down the line scoring Kiner-Falefa. Well, deja vu occurred in Arlington because the next batter Singer threw another 0-2 pitch down the middle. And unfortunately for most middle of the pack pitchers such as Singer, throwing an 0-2 pitch to Joey Gallo is not a good idea. Gallo’s two-run home run made the Rangers’ first inning lead 3-0.
Singer settled down and finished his outing with five innings pitched, just the three runs allowed, four hits, five strikeouts and walked three (one intentional).
Royals offense like the story has been, had traffic on the base paths but it did not result in runs on the board.
In the fifth, the Royals got one run across thanks to three singles to start the inning from Kelvin Gutierrez, Nicky Lopez and Whit Merrifield. Merrifield’s single was his third hit of the day, scoring Gutierrez. Unfortunately, Rangers’ starter, Jordan Lyles worked around it by getting the meat of the order (Santana, Perez, O’Hearn) to fly out.
The Rangers got that run back in the sixth off Jake Brentz. With one down, Brentz hit then walked back-to-back Rangers. After a ground out moving up both runners to second and third. Kiner-Falefa grounded to Gutierrez who tried to rush his throw which caused him to bobble the ball making everyone safe, scoring one. This was the Royals third error of the game, two by Gutierrez and two resulting in Ranger runs.
The Royals threatened again in the 8th after a lead off walk to Santana and a one-out single by O’Hearn. However, that was of course followed by a double play hit by Jorge Soler.
Old friend alert Ian Kennedy closed out the game for the Rangers with a 1-2-3 9th inning to complete the sweep.
Royals doubled the Rangers hit total but as the story has been for awhile, they were only 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position.
Three errors, four walks and one HBP also is not a great formula to win a ballgame in the major leagues; or any level of baseball that is.
Positive things: Lopez, Merrifield and O’Hearn had multiple hits each, Barlow continued doing Barlow things. I think that is it.
Four game series at Fenway starts tomorrow.
