SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Vikings lost over the weekend, but so did many of the teams they are battling for a playoff spot.
Minnesota fell 34-26 Sunday at Levi’s Stadium to fall to 5-6 and into the No. 7 spot in the NFC playoff race. The 49ers (6-5) moved up to No. 6, and they hold what could be a key tiebreaker over the Vikings.
Seven teams will make the playoffs in the NFC. And the Vikings were helped in Week 12 by New Orleans (5-6) losing on Thanksgiving 31-6 to Buffalo, and on Sunday Carolina (5-7) falling 33-10 at Miami and Philadelphia (5-7) losing 13-7 at the New York Giants. Atlanta (5-6) did win 21-14 at Jacksonville, but the Vikings currently hold a tiebreaker over the Falcons.
If Washington (4-6) loses at home Monday night to Seattle, the Vikings will stay at No. 7. If Washington wins, it would move into No. 7 due a conference record of 5-2 being better than Minnesota’s 4-3.
“It’s definitely still there,’’ Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson said of making the playoffs. “We’ve just got to look at the film, correct our mistakes and move onto the next week.’’
INJURY REPORT
The Vikings lost linebacker Anthony Barr in the third quarter Sunday with a hamstring injury. Head coach Mike Zimmer didn’t offer any indication on the severity of the injury.
“Anthony loves to play, and when he’s hurt, it hurts him more than it hurts us,’’ Zimmer said.
With Barr out, Nick Vigil went from being the third linebacker to an every-down player and Blake Lynch took over as the third linebacker.
The Vikings also lost left tackle Christian Darrisaw with an injury in the fourth quarter that the team did not disclose. He was replaced by Rashod Hill.
BRIEFLY
Mason Cole started at center for the Vikings, and Garrett Bradbury dressed out but did not play for the second straight game. It was Cole’s fourth straight start, the first two coming when Bradbury was on the COVID-19 reserve list. … In the first quarter, Vikings safety Harrison Smith had his first interception of the season and 29th of his career. It led to Minnesota’s first touchdown, a 2-yard pass from Kirk Cousins to Adam Thielen for a 7-0 lead. … Inactive for the Vikings were safety Camryn Bynum (ankle), cornerback Harrison Hand, quarterback Kellen Mond, guard Wyatt Davis, wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette and linebacker Chazz Surratt.
