Once again, the New York Yankees see their path forward blocked by the Sox.
But this time, it’s not the Boston Red Sox.
Rather, it’s the Chicago White Sox who could ruin general manager Brian Cashman’s offseason plans to improve the roster for 2022.
USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports “The #Whitesox still seeking front line starter like Robbie Ray and a second baseman like Marcus Semien.”
The 30-year-old Ray beat out Yankees ace Gerrit Cole for the 2021 American League Cy Young Award. He led the AL with a career-best 2.84 ERA and a career-high 193.1 innings pitched.
The 31-year-old Semien, who has significant experience at second base, is one of five premium shortstops on the open market, along with Los Angeles Dodgers’ Corey Seager, Colorado Rockies’ Trevor Story, Houston Astros’ Carlos Correa and New York Mets’ Javier Baez.
Playing for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, Semien hit a career-high 45 home runs and finished third in voting for the American League MVP Award. He also earned his first All-Star nod, Silver Slugger Award and Gold Glove Award.
This was the second time in three years Semien finished third in MVP voting. It also happened in 2019, when he played for the Oakland A’s. That year, he hit .285 with 33 home runs and 92 RBI.
