CLEVELAND -- The Detroit Lions are back in the losing column, with another toothless showing through the air in their 13-10 loss on the road against the Cleveland Browns in Week 11.
Tim Boyle got the nod under center for the injured Jared Goff, representing the backup quarterback’s first career start. It was tough sledding for Boyle, finishing 15 of 23 passing for only 77 yards with two interceptions. Detroit’s offense didn’t reach the red zone once, with Boyle’s longest pass going for 24 yards to tight end T.J. Hockenson.
This loss moves Detroit’s winless streak to 14 games, with the Lions failing to score 20 points in all but one game this season. That’s right. This offense has scored more than 20 points only once, needing two successful onside kicks and a pair of two-point conversions in their Week 1 loss.
“Look, I get it. I’m sure there’s a lot of people that question I was too conservative, and maybe I ought to throw it a lot more, but I’m just not ready to do that with where we were at here,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “Last week was a certain situation. This week was, man, I think you have to go where the game takes you. And look, we have plenty of ammo in there, but it’s also, man, you got to be careful and you got to be smart. And how do you get yourself to have the best chance to win at the end, where you’re in it? And so I just didn’t feel like it was right. I didn’t feel it was the right thing to do.
“Do I see myself trying to win games, you know, 14-13 or 16-13? No. But we’ll do whatever it takes to win a game. I just felt like the right thing to do was try to run it a little bit, try to take a little stress off Tim, get him going. But yeah, look, it’s no secret. We have to be better in the pass game.”
The Lions made it a 13-10 game, got the ball back, then ran a draw on third-and-14 before punting it away with less than five minutes to go. They never touched the ball again, with Nick Chubb putting the cherry on top of his impressive return to the lineup after being on the COVID list. Chubb ran 22 times for 130 yards, putting the game on ice with three first-down runs down the stretch.
