The Rule 5 Draft is no joke.
Last year, the New York Yankees lost right-hander Garrett Whitlock to the Boston Red Sox. And he became Boston’s best bullpen piece in 2021, posting a stellar 1.96 ERA in 46 regular-season appearances. Whitlock’s dominance continued in the playoffs, with a 2.16 ERA in five appearances.
With that in mind, MLB.com looked at most intriguing players eligible for selection in this year’s Rule 5 Draft.
For the Yankees, it’s catcher Josh Breaux.
Similar to Gary Sánchez in terms of his offensive and defensive profile as well as his build, Breaux is enticing because he has well above-average raw power and an arm that was once clocked up to 100 mph when he took the mound at McLennan (Texas) CC. The 2018 second-rounder still needs to polish his hitting and receiving, and he batted .249/.298/.503 with 23 homers in 90 games between High-A and Double-A.
The 24-year-old Breaux was a second-round pick of the Yankees in the 2018 MLB Draft. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the Yankees’ No. 18 prospect. Here’s their scouting report:
Breaux has a lofty ceiling but is a long ways from reaching it. His well-above-average bat speed and strength coupled with an extremely aggressive approach give him the raw pop to deliver 35 or more homers per season. But he also swings and misses excessively, and he’ll need to make better swing decisions and loft more balls in the air to fully tap into his power potential. ... While few catchers can match his pure arm strength, he has a slow transfer and inconsistent accuracy that led to him throwing out just 16% of basestealers in his first two pro seasons. He’s a well-below-average runner, so his only other position options would be first base or DH.
The 2021 Rule 5 Draft is scheduled for Dec. 9.
