The Giants have spent most of their offseason accumulating pitching depth, but other teams are doing the same thing. On Monday that led to a couple of waiver claims.
Left-hander Caleb Baragar was claimed by the Arizona Diamondbacks and right-hander Hunter Harvey by the Washington Nationals. Both players had been designated for assignment last week when the Giants added Carlos Rodon and Jakob Junis.
Baragar at one point looked like he would become a big part of the bullpen, and he posted a 2.78 ERA in 49 appearances for the Giants the last two seasons. But he got passed by others on the depth chart as he struggled with his command. In 22 appearances last season in Triple-A, Baragar allowed 21 earned runs and walked 21.
The 27-year-old was taken in the ninth round by the Giants in 2016 and after last season there was some thought that they would try and stretch him back out to be more of a starting option. The DFA came shortly after Baragar's planning meeting with Gabe Kapler and coaches.
"To have that news come when we were just talking about how he can grow and develop is definitely challenging," Kapler said. "However, he was in a really good frame of mind and understands that he may end up in a Giants uniform, he may end up in another uniform, but he still has an opportunity to make an impact at the Major League level. This is a transaction that definitely affects his career, but not one that's going to define him."

Harvey was picked up earlier in the offseason as a potential bullpen option this season. The Giants added Junis to the roster last week, signed Carlos Martinez to a minor league deal, and want to take a long look at Tyler Beede, who is out of options. Harvey will now return to a familiar region; all of his big league time has come with the Baltimore Orioles.
