LAKELAND, Fla. — Yankees GM Brian Cashman has something up his sleeve. Look for someone coming in soon because the Yankees freed up a 40-man roster spot on Thursday by releasing a pitching prospect they’d just added via waiver claim last week.
Left-hander Yoan Ayber was placed on waivers by the Yankees, then promptly claimed by the Chicago White Sox.
The roster move left the Yankees with an opening on their 40-man.
Who will it get it?
Are the Yankees bringing back free agent outfielder Brett Gardner for a 15th season? Gardner turns 39 in Augus, but wants to play at least one more year. His choice is to remain a Yankee, one of his agents recently told NJ Advance Media.

The Yankees acquired Ben Rortvedt at the start of spring training in the blockbuster trade with the Minnesota Twins, but the second-year backstop hasn’t yet played a game due to an oblique strain that is almost healed. He’s likely to start the season on the injured list and be ready by early-to-mid April..
Aybar, 24, had been claimed by the Yankees off waivers from the Colorado Rockies on March 20, six days after the Dominican had been designated for assignment. He spent the entire 2021 season with Double-A Hartford and pitched poorly, going 2-6 with a 6.22 ERA, 53 strikeouts and 32 walks in 46 1/3 innings over 49 relief outings.
