SOUTHFIELD, MI — Inkster Democratic Rep. Jewell Jones announced this week his driver’s license will be suspended and that he is joining the Farmington Hills-based WFDF 910 AM as a radio host.
“I once heard a wise man say, if you get knocked down, fall on your back, ‘cause if you can look up, you can get up! And I’ll be getting up every morning, Monday thru Friday, from 7am to 9am to share a piece of my mind, and give you a chance to share a piece of yours,” Jones said in an announcement post to Instagram.
His license suspension comes after Jones recently took a plea deal in a case stemming from a traffic stop after he was seen driving erratically.
Jones comes to the urban talk show station, which brands itself as 910 AM Superstation, to replace the former Flint Mayor, Karen Weaver, who recently announced she would make a new run for mayor.
He will join the station’s 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. block, Monday through Friday, the station announced.
“I am pleased... [to] welcome Jewell to the 910am Superstation family as the successor to Karen Weaver who did a great job during her time here at the radio station,” station CEO Kevin Adell said in a press release.
House committee meetings typically take place in person in Lansing on weekday mornings. Jones has been removed from his committee assignments, however, in light of his criminal case.
In a video posted to Instagram following House session Tuesday, Jones said he had “a big surprise” he hoped to share soon. The following post from Jones’ Instagram account Wednesday pictured him smiling behind the wheel of a vehicle.
“update: enjoying my last few days of driving,” Jones said in the caption of the post. “got a letter in the mail letting me know my license was getting suspended (and later, restricted) starting on March 5th. i have been driving for fifteen years and i can truly say that it has been real, and it has been fun, but it hasn’t been real fun... but come september.... i will be back on the road again. for every action there is a reaction #holla”
In January, Jones plead guilty to one count of escape of lawful custody, one count of operating while intoxicated, one count of possession of a weapon while intoxicated, one count of reckless driving and two counts of resisting and obstructing police.
His plea deal allows for Jones to use a youth sentencing program called the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act, which would wipe the felony convictions from his record after completion of the program.
The charges stem from Jones’ April 2021 arrest when he was tackled, stunned twice with a taser and sprayed in the face with pepper spray along Interstate 96 in Livingston County’s Handy Township after he was seen driving erratically.
Jones went to jail for violating his bond after tampering with his alcohol ankle monitor, and received additional felony charges during his arrest, after the Livingston County Sheriff accused him of bringing a handcuff key into jail.
Jones’ attorney, former Inkster mayor Byron Nolen mentioned the 26-year-old lawmaker’s desire to tell his side of the story of his arrest and bond violations.
“You want to tell his story and when this is over, you can sit down and tell that story, whatever that is. What you think was done right or wrong, someone will sit down and talk with you about it. But you got to do what’s best for you now,” Nolen said he told Jones. “To plead guilty to two felonies, but they never hit your record when you successfully complete probation not to have a felony record is important, especially somebody like him who may still be interested in politics, who knows what he does.”
