San Diego State coach Sean Lewis has another opening on his football staff.
SDSU defensive line coach Bojay Filimoeatu has been hired by new San Jose State coach Ken Niumatalolo, an SDSU spokesman confirmed. Football Scoop reported that Filimoeatu will be the Spartans’ inside linebackers coach.
It is the second time in two weeks the Aztecs have lost an assistant coach. Offensive line coach Bill O’Boyle was hired by Northwestern in early January.
O’Boyle was replaced within days by Mike Schmidt, who returned to SDSU after spending a decade coaching the Aztecs O-line.
Filimoeatu spent just one season at SDSU. He was one of two assistant coaches, along with cornerbacks coach Demetrius Sumler, retained from Brady Hoke’s staff.
Filimoeatu played a significant role in early December keeping SDSU’s recruiting class together during the coaching transition from Hoke to Lewis.
There was no immediate timeline on Filimoeatu’s replacement, though the hire is expected well before SDSU begins spring practice on March 12.
Filimoeatu reunites with San Jose State defensive coordinator Derrick Odum, who was retained by Niumatalolo. Filimoeatu coached the Spartans linebackers under Odum during the 2017-18 seasons.
The chain of events began Jan. 16 when Arizona hired Brent Brennan away from San Jose State. Niumatalolo was hired Jan. 21 at San Jose State.
Notably, Niumatalolo is the sixth new head coach in the Mountain West since the 2023 regular season ended. He joins Lewis (SDSU), Spencer Danielson (Boise State), Jeff Choate (Nevada), Bronco Mendenhall (New Mexico) and Jay Sawvel (Wyoming).
