TEMPE, Ariz. — Some losses sting more than others.
The Bruins are feeling especially sore after losing in overtime, 4-3, to the Coyotes Tuesday night at Mullett Arena, while also facing the prospect of losing Linus Ullmark, their Vezina Trophy-winning goalie for a stretch.
While Monday night’s shootout loss to the Avalanche produced a point and some good feelings, this point felt quite the opposite.
The Bruins squandered a pair of one-goal leads and needed to battle back in the third to salvage a point on a night where two points seemed gettable.
Ullmark was hurt during the extra session, falling to the ice immediately after deflecting a Logan Cooley shot. He was helped off the ice and to the dressing room with what coach Jim Montgomery labeled a “lower-body injury.”
“I don’t know the extent of it,” the coach said. “I’ll know more the next time we’re all together.”
Jeremy Swayman was forced to come in cold and gave up the game winner to Nick Schmaltz moments later.
The Bruins (24-8-8) had a couple of golden opportunities to end it in the extra session, but David Pastrnak was unable to convert on a pair of breakaways.
“Definitely feeling a little guilty. Had two breakaways to end the game there for our team,” said Pastrnak. “So yeah, definitely they will haunt me tonight, I won’t sleep.”
On the winner, Schmaltz got a pick block from Clayton Keller, who took Pastrnak out of the play, and then wristed it past a semi-screened Swayman, off the post, and in.
“Obviously it’s hard for a goaltender to sit on the bench for three hours and then come in with an unfortunate injury,” Pastrnak said.
The Bruins also lost Matt Poitras to an upper-body injury in the second period. Montgomery had no details on the extent of the rookie’s ailment.
Ullmark, who stopped 32 shots before leaving, has been a huge key to Boston’s success the last two seasons, teaming with Swayman to give the club the best goalie tandem in the NHL.
It’s likely the Bruins will summon Brandon Bussi to serve as Swayman’s understudy for at least the rest of this trip, which continues Thursday against the Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights and ends Saturday against the Blues.
Hampus Lindholm said he hadn’t had a chance to check in on Ullmark after the game.
“I know he’s a fighter so hopefully we’ll have him back here shortly,” he said.
The Bruins drew first blood, thanks to their red-hot power play.
Matt Dumba was whistled for hooking Mason Lohrei and the Bruins didn’t take long to make it hurt.
Pastrnak drifted in from the top of the right circle and snapped one that escalated quickly right over Connor Ingram’s glove for the 1-0 lead at 4:41.
It was the All-Star’s 25th goal of the season and his eighth on the power play. Pavel Zacha and Morgan Geekie picked up the helpers.
“That was great puck movement. We almost set up a nice, beautiful goal with the tap-in,” said Pastrnak. “It kind of bounced back to me and I saw a lane to shoot, so I was just feeling like I’m going to shoot it and it went in.”
Keller buried the equalizer with Matt Grzelcyk in the box for tripping.
Slipping through a scrum in front, Keller grabbed a loose puck and went top shelf on Ullmark for his 14th of the season.
It wasn’t tied for long, however, thanks to some more fourth line magic.
Jesper Boqvist, flashing speed previously unseen this season, darted down the wing before cutting across above the circles and ripping a wrister past Ingram’s blocker.
Boqvist’s snipe was his first goal (and point) of the season came just 50 seconds after Keller’s strike.
The Coyotes pulled even again, capitalizing on an errant, blind backhand pass by Trent Frederic.
Nick Bjugstad collected and fed Logan Cooley, who shuffled a pass to Dylan Guenther, rumbling down the slot. Guenther unleashed a one-timer past Ullmark for his second of the season and allowed Arizona to enter the locker room tied at 2.
Matias Maccelli gave the Coyotes (20-17-2) their first lead when he tapped in a rebound of a Lawson Crouse breakaway attempt.
Jake DeBrusk tied on a power-play goal off a nifty feed from Lindholm, setting the stage for the calamitous overtime.
